Boston, Massachusetts – Snow is spreading across southern New England today, bringing hazardous travel conditions and measurable accumulations across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Boston, snow arrived early this morning and will continue expanding westward through mid to late morning. Steadier snowfall is expected across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island through the afternoon, with snow tapering from west to east later today.
Forecast snowfall totals generally range from 2 to 4 inches across much of central and western Massachusetts, increasing to 4 to 6 inches across eastern Massachusetts, including the Boston metro area. Parts of northeastern Massachusetts may also see totals on the higher end of that range. Lighter amounts, around 1 to 2 inches, are expected in portions of western Connecticut.
The most significant travel impacts are expected along major roadways including Interstate 93, Interstate 95, Interstate 90 (Mass Pike), Route 128, and Interstate 495. Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility may slow travel, particularly during the afternoon and evening commute.
Visibility may drop to 1 to 3 miles at times, with brief reductions below one mile in heavier snowfall. Slippery conditions are likely on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses where snow sticks to the surface.
Along the Cape and Islands, snow may mix with or change to rain later today, with showers potentially lingering into the evening over Cape Cod and Nantucket. Accumulations in these areas are expected to be lower due to warmer coastal temperatures.
Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and increase following distance. Even moderate snowfall rates can quickly deteriorate road conditions.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve overnight as snow ends from west to east. Residents should continue monitoring official National Weather Service updates for timing adjustments and localized impacts.
