Boston, Massachusetts – Arctic air moving into southern New England is driving wind chills as low as -25 degrees overnight, prompting safety concerns across the Boston region and nearby highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect tonight through Friday morning for most of southern New England, excluding Cape Cod and the Islands. Forecast lows are expected to range from 5 degrees above zero to 5 degrees below zero, with persistent winds creating significantly colder wind chill values.
The advisory area includes communities along major roadways such as Interstate 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike), Interstate 93, Interstate 95, and Route 128, where early-morning commuters may face dangerous cold exposure while waiting for transportation, refueling vehicles, or responding to breakdowns.
Meteorologists warn that wind chills between -15 and -25 degrees can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and ensure adequate heating indoors. Extra caution is advised for vulnerable populations, including older adults, children, and individuals without reliable shelter.
The National Weather Service also recommends checking on pets, outdoor plants, and household pipes, as prolonged cold can lead to health risks, frozen plumbing, and property damage. Space heaters should be used carefully, and generators or grills should never be operated indoors.
For students, young workers, and overnight commuters, the cold may complicate early departures Friday morning, especially near open roadways where wind exposure is highest.
Temperatures are expected to slowly moderate later Friday as winds ease, but officials emphasize that the overnight period poses the greatest risk.
Residents are encouraged to monitor official updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies as conditions evolve.
