Boston, Massachusetts – Steady light snow is expected to develop early Sunday across southeast coastal Massachusetts, creating travel impacts through the day before tapering Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton reports snow arriving after midnight Saturday night, becoming most persistent during the day Sunday, especially across coastal Plymouth County, Cape Cod, and the Islands. Snow is expected to gradually exit from west to east Sunday evening, lingering the latest over Cape Cod and Nantucket.
Forecast snowfall totals range from 2 to 3 inches near Boston and portions of the immediate coast, 3 to 4 inches across Plymouth, New Bedford, and much of Cape Cod, and 4 to 6 inches on Nantucket. Areas farther inland, including Worcester County and western Massachusetts, are expected to see little or no accumulation.
Forecasters note medium confidence in snowfall amounts, as small shifts in the storm track could significantly affect totals, particularly along the western edge of the snow shield. Confidence is higher regarding timing, with snow most impactful during daylight hours Sunday.
Travel impacts are expected to be moderate, especially along major corridors including Interstates 93 and 95, Route 3, Route 6, and Route 140. Gusty winds of 30 to 45 mph near the coast may cause blowing snow, leading to periods of reduced visibility despite generally manageable snowfall rates.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and use caution on bridges and untreated roads. Coastal commuters and those traveling to or from Cape Cod and the Islands should be prepared for changing road conditions through Sunday night.
These conditions may particularly affect weekend travelers, service workers, and students returning ahead of the workweek.
