Boston, Massachusetts – Snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is expected across parts of southern New England as a winter storm moves through the region Friday night into Saturday morning, creating slick travel conditions and prompting expanded weather advisories.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for central and western Connecticut and western Massachusetts, where snowfall totals may reach 2 to 4 inches, with localized amounts of 5 to 6 inches possible in higher elevations and inland areas.
Farther east, including Boston, Providence, and coastal Massachusetts, lighter snowfall is forecast. The agency expects a light coating to up to 2 inches in eastern sections, though untreated roads may still become slippery during periods of steady snow.
Probabilistic guidance from the National Weather Service shows the highest likelihood of intense snowfall rates occurring between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., when some inland locations have a 40% to 75% chance of exceeding one inch of snow per hour. Cities including Bristol, Connecticut; Windsor Locks; Springfield; and parts of western Rhode Island fall within this higher-impact window.
Snowfall rates are expected to diminish after midnight, with lighter snow showers lingering until around 7 a.m. Saturday, according to the Weather Service. Temperatures near freezing may allow snow to accumulate quickly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.
The National Weather Service urges drivers to use caution when traveling overnight, particularly in warned areas where road conditions may deteriorate rapidly. Motorists should allow extra time, reduce speeds, and stay informed of local conditions as the storm progresses.
