Boston, Massachusetts – Rain is expected to return to the Boston area late Saturday afternoon, continuing overnight before tapering off Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service office in Boston/Norton.

Forecasters say widespread rain is likely after 5 p.m. Saturday, becoming steady through the evening and overnight hours. Precipitation chances increase sharply during the evening, with probabilities near 80 to 100 percent overnight across much of eastern Massachusetts, including Boston.

Rain is expected to gradually diminish from west to east early Sunday morning, though a few lingering showers may persist across Cape Cod and the Islands. No significant flooding is anticipated in the Boston area due to the progressive nature of the system.

While Boston itself is forecast to see primarily rain, areas of freezing rain are possible across higher elevations west of the city, including the east slopes of the Berkshires and the northern Worcester Hills. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for those locations from 5 p.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday.

In advisory areas, ice accretion of up to 0.20 inches is possible, which could lead to slick roads and hazardous travel conditions overnight. The National Weather Service cautioned that even light icing can significantly impact untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces.

For Boston-area commuters, the primary concern will be wet roads and reduced visibility Saturday evening, especially during peak travel hours. Travelers heading west or north overnight may encounter icy conditions outside the city.

Residents are encouraged to use caution while traveling, monitor local forecasts, and check updated road conditions. Additional updates are available at weather.gov/boston as the system moves through New England.
