Boston, MA – Residents across Greater Boston and much of eastern Massachusetts should prepare for overnight snow and slick travel conditions as a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day, bringing light but widespread accumulation.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, snow is expected to develop between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., spreading west to east across the region. Accumulations will generally range between 2 and 4 inches area-wide, with snowfall tapering off early Thursday morning.
Forecasters say the bulk of steady snow ends between 5 and 7 a.m., though a localized snow squall cannot be ruled out later Thursday morning. While snowfall amounts are modest, the timing could impact overnight travel and early New Year’s Day commutes, especially on untreated roads.
The Winter Weather Advisory covers much of southeastern New England, including eastern and central Massachusetts, Rhode Island, northern Connecticut, Worcester County, the northern Berkshires, and Martha’s Vineyard. Areas outside the advisory could still see a light coating up to 2 inches.
Officials caution that roads may become slick quickly, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time overnight and Thursday morning.
Residents with New Year’s Eve plans should monitor conditions closely and be prepared for reduced visibility and slippery surfaces as snow moves through.
