Boston, MA – Residents across Massachusetts are waking up to bitter cold this Friday morning as temperatures plunge well below seasonal averages, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Boston.
After an early morning chill with readings in the single digits and teens inland, temperatures are expected to rise only into the 20s and low 30s by afternoon. The Cape and Islands may reach the mid-30s, but most of New England will stay well below freezing through the day.
According to forecasters, northwest winds shifting to southwest at 5–12 mph will offer limited relief from the cold, with wind chills remaining in the teens across much of the state. Areas such as Springfield, Worcester, and Lowell recorded some of the coldest morning lows, dipping into the upper single digits before sunrise.
The NWS advises residents to bundle up in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors, especially early in the day. Pets should also be kept indoors as frostbite risk increases with wind and cold exposure.
The cold snap follows several mild days earlier in the week and serves as a reminder of the transition to winter weather patterns. Meteorologists expect temperatures to moderate slightly over the weekend, though overnight lows will continue to hover near freezing.
