Boston, Mass. – Massachusetts will bake under oppressive heat Wednesday afternoon, with temperatures in the low to mid-90s and humidity pushing heat index readings close to 100°F across much of the state. While coastal communities may see slightly cooler readings, inland cities from Springfield to Worcester will be sweltering in extreme humidity and dangerous heat.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, dewpoints in the upper 60s to low 70s will combine with hot air temperatures to create hazardous conditions, particularly for vulnerable populations. The agency advises limiting outdoor activity, drinking plenty of water, and checking on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning.
Travelers should be aware that prolonged exposure in vehicles without adequate cooling can quickly become life-threatening. Schools and sports leagues are urged to adjust schedules or move practices indoors. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency recommends using cooling centers where available and avoiding strenuous work during peak heating hours between 1 and 5 p.m.
The heat is expected to ease slightly along the coast by Wednesday evening, but inland areas will remain warm overnight, offering little relief. Additional advisories may be issued if high temperatures persist into late week.
