Boston, MA – Drivers across Massachusetts should be prepared for slippery road conditions Tuesday as light snow moves into parts of the state, particularly away from the coast and north of Route 2.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, accumulating snow of 1 to 3 inches is possible today, mainly north of Route 2 and in higher terrain of central and northern Massachusetts. Areas south of the Massachusetts Turnpike are expected to see less than 1 inch of snow, with little to no accumulation along the south coast.

Precipitation is forecast to begin late this morning and continue through this evening. Snow will be the dominant precipitation type early on, but forecasters say it may mix with or change to rain south of the Mass Pike during the afternoon as temperatures rise.

Communities most likely to see measurable snowfall include Fitchburg, Gardner, Greenfield, Pittsfield, and areas of the northern Worcester Hills, while Boston, Providence, and coastal southeastern Massachusetts are expected to see minimal impacts.

Even light snow accumulations could lead to slick roads, especially on untreated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses. Travel impacts are most likely during the late morning and afternoon hours, coinciding with periods of steady precipitation.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution, particularly in inland and higher elevation areas where snow may accumulate more efficiently.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later this evening as precipitation tapers off. Drivers should continue to monitor forecasts and road conditions before heading out.
