Amarillo, TX – August brought uneven rainfall to the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, with some communities finishing the month below normal even as yearly totals remain strong. Amarillo picked up just under 2 inches of rain in August, falling nearly an inch short of average.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Dalhart also came up dry, logging only 1.22 inches for the month, almost an inch below normal. In contrast, Borger measured just over 3 inches of rain, slightly above average, while Guymon, Oklahoma, finished the month with more than 4 inches—nearly 2 inches higher than usual.

Year-to-date, most locations are running ahead of schedule. Amarillo has recorded 18.80 inches in 2025, more than 4 inches above its norm. Guymon matches that 18.80-inch total, also well above average, while Borger stands at 16.21 inches. Dalhart is the outlier, trailing normal levels by more than an inch.

NWS forecasters noted heavier rainfall in the north-central and northeastern Panhandles, where some spots exceeded 5 inches. With soils already saturated in those areas, more rain in early September could bring localized flooding.
