Boonville, New York – Bitter Arctic air continues to grip northern Oneida County early Saturday, creating dangerous conditions for residents as wind chills plunge well below zero during the pre-dawn hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST for northern Oneida County, including the Boonville area. Wind chills are expected to range between 25 and 30 below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The coldest conditions are impacting higher terrain and open areas north of Rome, where exposure times increase risk for outdoor workers, early-morning travelers, and anyone without adequate winter protection. Vehicles may struggle in the extreme cold, and even short trips outside can become hazardous without proper clothing.

Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and cover all exposed skin with hats, face masks, and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors whenever possible, and residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors or anyone who may have trouble staying warm. Fire officials also stress safe use of space heaters and warn against running generators or grills indoors due to carbon monoxide risk.

Conditions are expected to slowly improve later this morning as temperatures rise, but officials caution that cold weather hazards may persist. Residents should continue monitoring updates in case additional advisories are issued.
