BANNER ELK, N.C. – The North Carolina High Country is bracing for a burst of early-winter weather tonight, as cold air and northwest winds combine to deliver accumulating snow and strong gusts across the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. The wintry mix will make for slick mountain roads and gusty conditions through Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Tuesday for the northwestern mountains of North Carolina, including Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Haywood, and Graham Counties. Forecasters expect up to 3 inches of snow in valleys, with 4 inches or more above 3,500 feet and localized higher totals near 5,000 feet. Winds could gust up to 45 mph, reducing visibility and leading to scattered downed limbs and power outages.
Drivers along U.S. 19E, N.C. 226, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I-26 near Sam’s Gap should expect snow-covered stretches, drifting snow, and blowing flakes on exposed ridgelines. Both the Monday morning and evening commutes could be impacted by slick spots and reduced visibility.
Residents should avoid unnecessary mountain travel, secure outdoor items, and keep emergency supplies handy. This system will taper off by Tuesday morning, but another blast of cold air late in the week could bring more light snow and reinforce winter’s early arrival across the western Carolinas.
