Idaho wakes up to rattling windows and bending trees as December weather turns active across the Treasure Valley. Gusty winds sweep through Boise today, pushing unsecured items and making travel more difficult, especially on exposed roads and highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Boise, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 5 a.m. through 5 p.m. Wednesday for the Upper Treasure Valley and Western Magic Valley, including Boise and Twin Falls. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph at times.

Drivers may notice sudden crosswinds on open stretches of I-84, particularly during the late morning and afternoon. High-profile vehicles face the greatest risk. Power outages are possible if gusts bring down weakened tree limbs. Residents should secure holiday decorations, trash bins, and loose outdoor items early today.

Temperatures remain mild for mid-December, hovering near the lower 50s today. Rain chances increase as the wind eases Wednesday afternoon. Wet pavement could linger into Wednesday night, setting the stage for slick conditions if temperatures dip closer to freezing.

By Thursday, rain becomes more widespread across southwest Idaho. While valley snow is not expected, nearby mountain passes may see accumulating snow. That raises early winter travel concerns for those heading out of town or returning from holiday trips. Watch for reduced visibility and rapidly changing road conditions at higher elevations.

Looking ahead, the extended five-day outlook shows continued chances for rain through Friday, with highs in the mid-40s to mid-50s. Nighttime lows dip into the 30s, increasing the risk of black ice on untreated roads, especially during early morning drives.

Plan extra travel time, keep both hands on the wheel during gusty periods, and stay alert for changing conditions as winter weather slowly tightens its grip.
