Boise, ID – An active and potentially hazardous stretch of weather is expected to impact Boise and much of southwest Idaho beginning Wednesday, with strong winds, periods of heavy precipitation, and significant snowfall in the mountains through early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boise, an atmospheric river combined with a strong cold front will move into the region Wednesday, bringing widespread rain to lower elevations and heavy snow to higher terrain. Wind gusts are expected to range from 30 to 50 mph, with isolated gusts up to 60 mph possible across parts of central and eastern Idaho.

Rainfall will be most noticeable in valleys, while snow levels in the mountains are expected to drop quickly. Forecasters say higher elevations above 6,000 to 7,000 feet could receive between 8 and 15 inches of snow by Saturday morning, with the greatest impacts across mountain passes and summit areas.

A second weather system is expected to arrive Thursday afternoon into Friday, briefly pushing snow levels higher before another cold front causes rain to change back to snow. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for portions of the mountains, warning of dangerous travel conditions, reduced visibility, and snow-covered roads.

Strong winds Wednesday and Thursday could also lead to blowing snow in exposed areas and difficult travel for high-profile vehicles. Power disruptions are possible in areas experiencing the strongest gusts.

Residents planning travel through mountain passes are urged to check road conditions and be prepared for rapidly changing weather. Officials recommend securing loose outdoor items and staying updated on forecasts as conditions evolve through the end of the week.
