Boise, Idaho – Heavy rain sweeping across central Idaho late Thursday could trigger flash flooding in mountain communities, with the greatest concern in areas scarred by recent wildfires. Officials warn that flooding and debris flows may develop overnight as rainfall intensifies.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday through 3 p.m. Friday for the Boise and West Central Mountains. Rain totals between 1 and 2 inches are possible, with isolated higher amounts. Burn scar areas such as those near the Moose Fire and other recent wildfires face an elevated threat of mudslides.
Travel could be impacted on U.S. Highway 55 and State Highway 21, where runoff may cause road closures or washouts. Residents are urged to avoid low-lying crossings, charge devices in case of power outages, and prepare to move quickly if flood warnings are issued overnight.
The heaviest rainfall is expected late Thursday into early Friday morning, before tapering off by the afternoon. Officials caution that additional advisories may be issued if rainfall continues to oversaturate soils into the weekend.
