Boise, Idaho – A sharp cold front is expected to move through the Treasure Valley late Sunday night into Monday morning, bringing a rapid temperature drop and clearing out stagnant air across the Boise area.

According to the National Weather Service in Boise, forecast guidance continues to show a steep decline in atmospheric thickness values between 850 and 700 millibars, a signal of much colder air arriving overnight. Forecasters say this front should be strong enough to break the ongoing inversion, improving air quality conditions after several days of stagnant air.

The cold front is expected to pass through areas near I-84, US-20, and State Highway 44 late Sunday night, with temperatures falling quickly after midnight. While the front itself may be dry, colder air settling in behind it will set the stage for potential snow chances later in the week.

The National Weather Service notes that Tuesday through Thursday look cold enough to support snow, with snow levels near 5,000 feet (1,525 meters). However, current model data suggests conditions may be drier than previously forecast, reducing the likelihood of widespread snowfall at lower elevations, including the Boise metro.

Drivers traveling during the early Monday morning hours may notice changing conditions as colder air moves in, especially in outlying and higher-elevation areas near ID-55 and US-95, where temperatures typically fall faster. While no significant travel impacts are expected immediately with the front, residents are encouraged to stay alert for changing conditions later in the week.

The clearing of the inversion may also lead to improved visibility and air quality across Ada and Canyon counties. Forecasters emphasize that confidence is higher in the temperature drop than in any precipitation at this time.

Additional updates are expected as the colder pattern settles in.
