Body Found in Illinois River Saturday Morning

Peoria County, IL – A body was found in the Illinois River on Saturday, July 6th, 2024, prompting a multi-agency investigation. 

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at approximately 9:32 a.m. after a fisherman discovered the body behind Liberty Steel at 7000 S. Adam St., Bartonville. The body was located approximately 300 yards southwest of the Shade-Lohmann Bridge near the Peoria Lock and Dam, caught on the dam.

According to the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, the body is that of a black male, age unknown, who appears to have been in the river for at least 24 hours. Due to the condition of the body, the exact age is undetermined. The scene was attended by Bartonville Police, Fondulac Park PD, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Peoria County Coroner. The body was retrieved by Fondulac Park District’s officers using their boat.

The identity and manner of death remain under investigation. Preliminary findings show no obvious signs of trauma. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood will provide more details after identification and autopsy.
