Asheville, North Carolina – Drivers and residents across the North Carolina mountains are facing dangerous conditions tonight as heavy snow and gusty winds blanket higher elevations, increasing the risk of impassable roads and power outages through Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until Thursday midday for multiple mountain counties, including Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Haywood, Swain, and Graham counties. Snow is expected mainly above 3,500 feet, with widespread totals of 2 to 4 inches and significantly higher amounts on exposed ridges. The highest elevations in Haywood and Swain counties could see 8 to 12 inches of snowfall before the event winds down.
Snow-covered and icy roads are expected to develop quickly this evening, especially along mountain passes and secondary roads. Travel could become extremely difficult or impossible in some areas, particularly near ridgetops and higher mountain communities. Strong winds combined with heavy, wet snow may bring down tree limbs and power lines, leading to scattered to potentially widespread power outages overnight.
The hazardous conditions are expected to impact both the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes, especially for residents traveling between valleys and higher terrain. Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, carry emergency supplies, and check road conditions through 5-1-1 before heading out.
Snow intensity is expected to gradually decrease late Thursday morning, but lingering impacts may continue as crews work to clear roads and restore power. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen in the highest elevations.
