Roanoke, Va. – Damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding could hit parts of southwest Virginia by late Thursday afternoon, especially east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Level 1 (Marginal) risk for severe weather remains in place through this evening, with storms expected to intensify after 2 p.m. Primary threats include wind gusts strong enough to down trees or power lines. Flash flooding is also a concern due to saturated ground from earlier rain this week.

Cities like Lynchburg, Danville, and South Boston lie in the highest threat zone, while Roanoke and Blacksburg may see general thunderstorms. Communities east of the Blue Ridge should prepare for frequent lightning and brief periods of torrential rain. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during storms, and monitor local alerts.

Storms are expected to weaken after sunset and dissipate overnight, but additional rain could still impact low-lying areas. The Weather Service advises continued caution, especially near streams or flood-prone roads.

More updates are expected if conditions worsen or new warnings are issued this evening.
