Asheville, NC – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. this morning for parts of western North Carolina, where freezing rain continues to cause icy road conditions across the higher elevations of the Blue Ridge.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a light glaze of ice is expected across Avery, Yancey, Mitchell, Caldwell Mountains, Burke Mountains, and McDowell Mountains counties. Even minimal ice accumulation may lead to slippery conditions on roads, bridges, and sidewalks, especially in shaded or elevated areas.
Motorists traveling through Newland, Burnsville, Spruce Pine, and Old Fort should expect hazardous travel early this morning. The weather service cautions drivers to slow down, avoid sudden braking, and prepare for patchy ice on untreated surfaces.
While significant power outages are not expected, isolated disruptions are possible due to light ice on trees and power lines. Conditions are forecast to improve after 9 a.m. as temperatures climb above freezing and the freezing rain transitions to light rain or drizzle.
