Mankato, MN – Residents across Blue Earth County are being urged to check carbon monoxide alarms and take extra precautions today as winter temperatures push more people indoors and increase the risk of CO buildup, according to a new alert from the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, carbon monoxide poisoning can occur at any time of the year, but the danger rises sharply during cold weather when homes are sealed and fuel-burning appliances run more frequently. Deputies noted that CO is colorless and odorless, making alarms the only reliable way to detect a leak.

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to install carbon monoxide alarms within 10 feet of every sleeping area or inside each bedroom. Officials also recommend testing alarms monthly to ensure they are functioning properly, especially as furnace usage climbs in the coming weeks.

According to the alert, residents should take immediate action if an alarm sounds. Anyone experiencing illness or dizziness should call 911 right away. Those who feel fine should still open windows and doors for ventilation and contact their utility provider to inspect equipment.

Authorities also warn that CO exposure can occur outside the home. Warming up a vehicle inside an enclosed garage—even with the door open—can cause dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to build quickly. The sheriff’s office advises motorists to warm their vehicles outdoors only.

Deputies said residents should also clear snow and debris from furnace exhaust pipes, dryer vents, and fireplace or oven outlets to prevent blockages that can trap carbon monoxide inside a home.
