Spokane, WA – A powerful winter storm is set to bring up to 18 inches of snow to parts of Washington, including Stevens Pass, just in time for New Year’s Eve Day. Blowing snow and gusty winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday for Stevens Pass, Holden Village, and surrounding areas. Snowfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour during peak periods Sunday afternoon, making travel extremely challenging. Blowing snow, coupled with wind gusts reaching 40 mph, may reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents.
In Spokane, snow accumulation of up to 9 inches is expected by Monday morning, with strong winds contributing to occasional whiteouts. Drivers on major routes, such as Cloverland Road and Stevens Pass, should prepare for slow travel and potential delays.
New Year’s Eve Day travelers are urged to plan ahead and monitor local forecasts as conditions may worsen. Officials recommend carrying winter survival kits, checking tire chains, and limiting non-essential trips. Power outages remain a concern in areas prone to strong wind and heavy snow.
Further east, Idaho’s Lookout Pass could see up to 18 inches of snow above 3,000 feet, adding another layer of complexity for those traveling near the Washington-Idaho border.
