Buffalo, NY – Lake effect snow is expected to create challenging driving conditions across western New York, with the heaviest accumulations occurring south of Buffalo through Tuesday. Residents should prepare for significant disruptions as snow bands continue to build off Lake Ontario.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow showers will intensify Tuesday night, with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation per hour in some areas. High winds of up to 25 mph could cause drifting snow, reducing visibility on major roads, including I-90 and Route 219. Travel delays and slick conditions are likely, especially during the morning and evening commutes.
Tuesday’s Forecast:
Expect partly sunny skies during the day with a high near 34°F, but snow showers will develop by evening. Wind speeds will increase to 15-20 mph, making the temperature feel even colder. Snowfall will continue through Tuesday night, with additional light accumulations likely.
Midweek Outlook:
A winter storm system will pass through the area Wednesday into Thursday, bringing widespread snow showers and gusts up to 40 mph. Snow squalls are possible, particularly in exposed areas and along open stretches of highway. Temperatures will hover around freezing midweek, with a high of 31°F Thursday before dipping to 22°F overnight.
Drivers are urged to carry emergency kits and allow extra travel time. Pedestrians should use caution on untreated sidewalks, as freezing conditions could persist through the week.
