Northern Indiana – The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana is warning of dangerous travel conditions as strong winds and lake effect snow impact the region today through Thursday morning.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for the entire area with gusts up to 50 mph, while a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for counties near Lake Michigan, including Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph (MI), where 3–6 inches of snow are expected by early Thursday.

Cold air rushing in behind a passing front will drive temperatures into the 30s today, with wind chills dropping into the teens by tonight. Snow will intensify late this afternoon and evening, producing blowing and drifting snow that will reduce visibility to near zero at times.

Forecast Highlights:

  • 🌬️ Today: Very windy with west to southwest gusts up to 50 mph; snow showers developing by afternoon.
  • 🌨️ Tonight–Thursday: Lake effect snow continues, especially across northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.
  • ❄️ Friday: Chance of lingering morning snow; frigid start with wind chills in the teens.

Impacts:

  • Blowing and drifting snow will make roads slick and difficult to navigate.
  • Strong winds may cause isolated power outages and hazardous travel, particularly along north-south highways.
  • Temperatures will remain well below freezing, leading to refreezing of wet surfaces.

Motorists are urged to use extra caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and check for local advisories before heading out.
