Springfield, Ill. – Drivers across central Illinois face hazardous travel this morning as dense fog blankets much of the region, cutting visibility to less than a quarter mile in spots. Commuters north of Interstate 72, from Macomb through Bloomington and toward Kankakee, are seeing the heaviest impacts.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, visibility will fluctuate rapidly through 8 a.m. before conditions improve later in the morning. The advisory highlights the stretch from Macomb to Bloomington as the area with the greatest chances for prolonged dense fog.
Major highways, including I-55, I-57, and I-74, are seeing patches of low visibility that could create sudden slowdowns and hazardous driving conditions. Local school traffic and early work commutes may be especially affected. Officials urge drivers to allow extra time, reduce speed, and use low-beam headlights when traveling through fog-prone corridors.
Visibility is expected to steadily improve after 8 a.m., though lingering patches may persist in low-lying or rural areas. Motorists are advised to remain cautious until the fog fully lifts later in the morning.
