Bloomington, Indiana – A Bloomington man faces felony charges after a Feb. 25 crash killed a 74-year-old woman and seriously injured a child near S. Rockport Road and W. Stansifer Court.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Team, a northbound Subaru allegedly crossed left of center and collided head-on with a southbound Kia. A third vehicle, a Toyota, became involved after striking debris from the initial crash.

The driver of the Kia was identified as Theadora Wellman, 74, of Bloomington. She was pronounced deceased at the scene, authorities said.

Investigators said a 7-year-old passenger in the Subaru sustained serious injuries and was flown to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The child has since been discharged. The Toyota’s driver was treated for minor injuries and released the night of the crash.

The driver of the Subaru was identified as James Caudell, 48, of Bloomington. He was transported to a hospital for medical treatment and later consented to a chemical test. Toxicology results remain pending, according to the sheriff’s office.

Upon his discharge from the hospital on March 1, Caudell was taken into custody and booked into the Monroe County Jail on preliminary charges of reckless homicide, operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. He allegedly remains in custody.

The investigation remains ongoing. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The crash impacted a well-traveled corridor frequently used by commuters and local families.
