Mankato, MN – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of central and southern Minnesota from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, as forecasters warn of gusty winds, blowing snow, and potential whiteout conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen.
Meteorologists say a strong Alberta clipper system will move through the region Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night, bringing accumulating snow and winds gusting between 30 and 50 mph. While snowfall totals may remain modest—up to two inches in some areas—the combination of strong winds and falling snow could create ground blizzard conditions and dangerously low visibility, especially along and north of Interstate 94.
Counties under the watch include Renville, Blue Earth, Nicollet, Brown, Freeborn, Sibley, Le Sueur, and Redwood, among others. The National Weather Service cautions that travel may become treacherous Tuesday night into early Wednesday, particularly across open rural areas and elevated roadways.
Forecasters advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and stay alert for possible warnings as the system approaches.
