Aberdeen, SD – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota through early Wednesday morning, as heavy snow and high winds create dangerous travel conditions just ahead of Thanksgiving.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls, the storm is producing 4 to 8 inches of snow across parts of Marshall, Roberts, Grant, and Day counties in South Dakota, and Traverse, Big Stone, Lincoln, Lyon, and Cottonwood counties in Minnesota. Some areas could see wind gusts between 45 and 50 mph, leading to widespread blowing snow and whiteout conditions at times.
Forecasters warn that visibility may drop below one-quarter mile, especially during the Tuesday evening commute, as temperatures fall and snow accumulates quickly. Roads will become slick, and drifting snow may make travel very difficult to impossible on highways including US-12, US-81, and MN-23.
Officials urge drivers to delay travel if possible, especially for those starting early Thanksgiving trips. If travel is necessary, motorists should ensure their vehicles are winter-ready and carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight.
The storm is expected to taper off overnight, but gusty northwest winds and drifting snow will continue into Wednesday morning, especially in open and rural areas.
