Des Moines, IA – The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of central, north-central, and western Iowa, in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning (December 9–10, 2025).

Forecasters warn of potential blizzard conditions caused by intense winds and widespread blowing snow, despite little new snowfall expected. Wind gusts could reach 50 to 60 mph, creating near whiteout visibility and dangerous travel conditions across much of the state.

Although only scattered snow showers are expected with minor additional accumulation, the existing snowpack—much of which is 6 inches or deeper—will be lofted and drifted by the high winds. This could lead to severe blowing and drifting snow, especially across open rural areas.

Travel may become treacherous and potentially life-threatening, particularly along major highways such as Interstate 35, Interstate 80, and U.S. 20, where visibility could drop below one-quarter mile at times.

Hazardous conditions will likely peak between midnight and Wednesday morning, impacting the morning commute. The NWS warns that tree damage and isolated power outages are possible due to the strength of the winds.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor objects, and monitor forecast updates, as a Blizzard Warning may be issued if conditions worsen.
