Des Moines, IA – A powerful blizzard is set to impact northern and western Iowa on Wednesday, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT Wednesday. Snow accumulations between 2 and 10 inches are expected, with the heaviest amounts forecasted in the northwest portion of the state. Winds could gust as high as 65 mph, creating whiteout conditions and making travel nearly impossible at times.
The storm may also bring thundersnow, an unusual but dangerous winter weather phenomenon. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds could down power lines, leading to potential outages. Additionally, the hazardous conditions could significantly impact the Wednesday evening commute.
Residents in affected areas, including Mason City, Fort Dodge, Carroll, and Algona, are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If travel is required, officials recommend carrying a winter survival kit and staying with your vehicle if stranded.
For updated travel conditions, residents should check the Iowa 511 app or visit www.511ia.org. Emergency preparedness is advised as this storm moves into the region.
