Charleston, WV – A winter storm is set to bring significant snow, high winds, and dangerous travel conditions to much of West Virginia late Wednesday into Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued multiple advisories, including a Blizzard Warning for mountain areas and a Winter Weather Advisory for surrounding regions.

According to the NWS Charleston office, snowfall is expected to reach up to 8 inches in the highest elevations, with winds gusting as high as 55 mph. Lower-lying areas could see 3 to 5 inches of snow, with gusts around 50 mph. These conditions could create whiteout scenarios and treacherous driving along key routes, including Interstate 79 and local mountain roads. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential power outages due to high winds.

By Thursday morning, snow showers will taper off, but bitterly cold air will settle into the area. Wind chills could drop as low as -15°F in some regions, posing risks for frostbite. The cold weather is expected to persist through Friday, with daytime highs near 30°F and nighttime lows dipping into the teens.

The weather will clear by the weekend, bringing sunny skies and slightly milder temperatures. Saturday’s high is forecasted to reach 40°F, with lows near 28°F. Sunday looks even warmer, with highs near 53°F, though rain showers are expected late into the evening.

Motorists should monitor road conditions via WV511.org and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency kits. Residents are urged to stay informed by checking updates on weather.gov and local news outlets.
