Sioux Falls, SD – A powerful winter storm is creating blizzard conditions across parts of South Dakota today, with strong winds and falling snow expected to make travel extremely dangerous.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says snow will continue through the afternoon west of Interstate 29 and into the evening east of I-29.
Blizzard Conditions
As the storm strengthens, winds are expected to increase significantly.
Forecasters say wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph will combine with falling snow to produce:
- Near-zero visibility
- Blowing and drifting snow
- Dangerous to impossible travel conditions

Snow totals vary across the region, but several areas could see multiple inches of accumulation, especially across eastern South Dakota and parts of western Minnesota.
