Blacksburg, Virginia – Damaging winds and localized flooding are possible across southwest and central Virginia through tonight as a cold front triggers strong thunderstorms Tuesday, July 1.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, showers and storms will develop throughout the day, intensifying into the evening hours. A widespread damaging wind threat exists across the entire region, with the greatest concern centered in northeast parts of the state, including Lynchburg and surrounding counties.

Storms could bring down trees, power lines, and disrupt travel on key routes like I-81 and US-460. The threat increases with any isolated severe cells that form ahead of the cold front. In addition to wind, slower-moving storms may dump heavy rain over already saturated areas, increasing the risk of localized flash flooding—particularly in low-lying neighborhoods and poorly drained roadways.

Residents in Roanoke, Blacksburg, Danville, and surrounding areas should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor alerts closely. Emergency officials recommend having multiple ways to receive warnings overnight, including weather radios and phone alerts.

Storm activity is expected to taper off after midnight, but more updates or alerts may be issued if conditions intensify this evening.
