Blacksburg, Virginia – Triple-digit heat indices and stormy afternoons will grip southern Virginia through Wednesday, as a lingering heat wave peaks midweek across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Heat Advisory is in effect this afternoon for Southside Virginia into the North Carolina Piedmont, with scattered thunderstorms expected daily through Wednesday evening. Highs are projected to hit between 83°F and 97°F, with oppressive humidity pushing the “feels like” temperatures even higher.
Cities including Danville, Martinsville, South Boston, and Lynchburg are facing dangerously hot conditions, especially during the late afternoon and early evening. Thunderstorms may bring brief relief, but also carry risks of lightning, heavy downpours, and localized flooding.
Drivers are urged to watch for slick roads during evening commutes. Residents should limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Power outages remain possible in storm-prone areas.
A cold front is expected to sweep in late Wednesday night, bringing cooler, drier air by Thursday and potentially ending the multi-day stretch of heat and storms.
