Blacksburg, Virginia – Strong winds are set to ramp up quickly tonight across southwest Virginia, with the highest gusts arriving overnight and lasting into Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, winds will increase behind a departing cold front Friday evening, shifting out of the north and northwest. Gusts are expected to peak overnight through late Saturday morning, with speeds reaching up to 45 mph in higher elevations, including areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway and near I-77 and I-81 corridors.
Communities such as Blacksburg, Roanoke, and Wytheville will experience sustained breezes, but the strongest gusts will target ridge tops and exposed areas. These winds may be strong enough to knock down small tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor objects.
Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, should use caution on elevated roadways and mountain passes where sudden gusts can impact vehicle control.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for isolated power outages if tree limbs fall onto lines.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken by Saturday evening, with calmer conditions returning overnight.
