Blacksburg, Virginia – Gusty winds will be the main weather concern across southwest Virginia on Friday as a Wind Advisory goes into effect for the New River Valley and surrounding counties.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg says west winds will increase Friday morning, with sustained speeds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 50 mph possible through the afternoon and early evening. These winds could make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, and may blow around unsecured objects. Isolated tree damage and spotty power outages are also possible. Rain today tapers off tonight, giving way to sunshine on Friday despite the blustery conditions.

Winds ease Friday night, setting the stage for a quieter weekend. Saturday looks sunny and milder, with highs climbing into the lower 50s, followed by dry and seasonable weather Sunday.

Looking ahead to the holiday, Christmas Eve on Wednesday is shaping up calm and mild for late December across Blacksburg and the New River Valley. Current forecasts point to partly sunny skies and dry conditions, a favorable setup for travel and last-minute holiday plans, with no significant weather hazards expected at this time.
