Blacksburg, VA – Fires could spread quickly across southwest Virginia within minutes today as dry air and gusty winds peak during the afternoon, prompting heightened concern for outdoor burning and travel safety.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, wind gusts between 15 and 25 mph will develop by late afternoon, with even stronger gusts along ridge tops. Combined with very low humidity, these conditions will significantly increase fire danger from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Sunday.

Communities across Montgomery, Roanoke, and Pulaski counties face the greatest risk, especially in open fields and along roadways like U.S. 460 and Interstate 81 where dry vegetation can ignite بسهولة. Fire officials warn that any spark, including from equipment or discarded cigarettes, could lead to fast-moving flames.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged across Virginia and banned in parts of neighboring North Carolina. Residents should secure ignition sources, avoid parking on dry grass, and remain alert for smoke or fire activity nearby.

Winds will ease after sunset, and moisture is expected to return Monday, lowering the fire threat. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen before then.
