Blacksburg, VA – Cold air grips the Blue Ridge this morning as a Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect for southwest Virginia, where snow is set to move in late tonight into Monday morning. Residents should prepare for a slushy and potentially slick commute as the first measurable December snow arrives.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, snow is expected to begin around 1 a.m. Monday and continue through midday. Most areas can expect 1 to 3 inches of accumulation, with locally higher amounts possible above 3,000 feet. Roads will quickly become slippery as temperatures hover near freezing, especially in shaded valleys and higher elevations along I-81 and Route 460.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and stay alert for changing conditions. Visibility may drop briefly during heavier bursts of snow, particularly across Pulaski, Montgomery, Giles, and Roanoke counties. The Monday morning and evening commutes could be affected as the system gradually tapers off by late afternoon.

By Tuesday, sunshine returns with highs in the upper 30s, followed by another round of cold air midweek. Wednesday looks dry but chilly before a possible rain chance Thursday evening. Long-range models hint at another Arctic blast between Dec. 11–17, which could bring lake-effect snow to the Great Lakes and more winter cold across the Mid-Atlantic.
