Blacksburg, Virginia – Strong northwest winds are expected to impact the Blacksburg area and much of southwest Virginia on Sunday, with gusts ranging from 30 to 45 mph and isolated gusts up to 55 mph along higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg.
Forecasters say the strongest winds are expected between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, as a strong disturbance moves across the lower Mid-Atlantic. The most significant impacts are anticipated along the Blue Ridge and other prominent ridge lines, though gusty conditions will also be felt in valleys and urban areas, including Blacksburg.
In addition to the wind, upslope snow showers are expected to accompany the system. Snow accumulation is forecast to reach up to 3 inches in western Greenbrier County, with 1 inch or less elsewhere, including areas near Blacksburg. While snowfall amounts will be limited, the combination of wind and snow could reduce visibility at times.
The National Weather Service warns that these conditions may lead to a few downed trees or large limbs, particularly in areas with saturated soils. Isolated power outages are also possible due to wind-related damage.
High-profile vehicles, including trucks, vans, and SUVs, may experience difficult travel conditions, especially on exposed roadways and bridges. Drivers are urged to use caution and keep both hands on the wheel during gusty periods.
For residents, students, and weekend travelers in the Blacksburg area, securing loose outdoor items is recommended ahead of the strongest winds. Conditions are expected to gradually improve Sunday evening as winds decrease.
