Cold air grips the Blue Ridge this morning as temperatures in Blacksburg and Roanoke plunge into the teens, leaving behind dangerous black ice on roads, bridges, and sidewalks. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg warns drivers to use extreme caution as slick, invisible ice has been reported across much of southwest and south-central Virginia.

A Special Weather Statement remains in effect through midmorning Tuesday, cautioning that any remaining moisture from Monday’s melt has frozen solid. With lows between 14°F and 18°F, even treated roadways may have patchy ice. Motorists traveling on I-81, Route 460, and U.S. 220 should reduce speed and allow extra distance for braking, especially on shaded curves and bridge decks.

By late morning, sunshine will help melt some ice, but another system approaches by Wednesday afternoon, bringing a 40% chance of rain and snow showers. Temperatures will briefly warm to the mid-40s Wednesday before dipping back below freezing overnight — potentially leading to another round of refreezing on Thursday morning.

The pattern remains cold and unsettled through the end of the week, with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s and additional light snow possible Friday night. Long-range models suggest colder Arctic air could return between Dec. 11–17, keeping Virginia in a chilly, active setup as the early winter season continues to build.

Residents are urged to check driveways and sidewalks before stepping out, as black ice can form without warning.
