Blacksburg, VA — Gusty winds and low humidity across southwest and central Virginia Thursday are combining to create a high fire risk, especially near highways like I-81. Fire crews remain on alert as dry fuels and breezy conditions continue through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Hazardous Weather Outlook is in effect through tonight for much of Virginia, including Montgomery, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties. Winds may gust up to 20 mph, and relative humidity could dip below 25%, sharply increasing wildfire danger.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose outdoor items. Local emergency officials warn even a spark from a grill or lawn equipment could trigger a fast-moving fire. Conditions will ease by Friday as humidity rises and rain returns.

Friday brings a 40% chance of showers starting late morning, with highs around 74°F and light afternoon winds. Rain chances remain into the night with lows in the low 50s.

Five-Day Forecast:

  • Saturday: Partly sunny, high of 77°F. 30% chance of late-night showers.
  • Sunday: Rain likely, especially after 8 a.m., with a high near 68°F. 70% chance of precipitation.
  • Monday: Scattered showers, high near 73°F. Cloudy.
  • Tuesday: Sunny with a high of 62°F.
