Blacksburg, VA – Scattered showers and thunderstorms will return to western Virginia by late Wednesday morning, bringing the heaviest activity to areas west of the Blue Ridge. Some storms could deliver nearly an inch of rain, with gusty winds strong enough to topple outdoor tents and loose items.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, showers may begin as early as 11 a.m. Wednesday in the most western counties before spreading east through the afternoon. While not all storms will clear the Blue Ridge, another round of showers is expected Thursday, keeping the region unsettled into late week.

Rainfall totals will generally range from a tenth to a quarter of an inch, though locally higher amounts near one inch are possible where storms repeat. The overall severe weather threat is low, but forecasters caution that stronger cells could still bring brief downpours and isolated gusts.

Travelers along Interstate 81 and secondary mountain roads may encounter slick pavement and reduced visibility during heavier rainfall. Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture and check for updated alerts as conditions evolve.

Showers may linger into Thursday, with another chance of rain later in the week as systems continue to move across the mountains.
