BLACKSBURG, Va. – Southwest Virginia wakes to a crisp fall morning, but warmer air and late-weekend rain are on the way. After a brief frost threat Friday, the New River Valley will see a quick rebound into the upper 70s before showers arrive Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, clear skies and calm winds Friday morning will allow patchy frost in low-lying areas from Pulaski to Floyd and along U.S. 460. Residents are urged to cover sensitive vegetation and protect outdoor plants before temperatures rebound. By afternoon, sunshine takes hold, pushing highs near 68°F under calm conditions — ideal for fall yardwork and early Halloween decorating.

Saturday brings another pleasant day with highs near 77°F and increasing clouds by evening as moisture builds ahead of a cold front. Winds pick up Sunday, gusting up to 30 mph, with scattered showers developing during the afternoon and becoming likely by nightfall. Rainfall totals should remain light, but slick roads may slow travel along I-81 and area backroads late Sunday.

By Monday, high pressure returns with bright skies and highs in the low 60s, kicking off another stretch of clear, mild weather through midweek.

Southwest Virginia’s fall charm continues — just be ready for another quick switch from chilly mornings to breezy, rainy evenings before sunshine returns.
