Blacksburg, Va. – Much of Virginia will see calm weather today, but scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop over the mountains by this afternoon. Drivers heading across the Blue Ridge should prepare for sudden downpours and brief lightning delays.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, skies will stay partly sunny with temperatures close to seasonal averages. Highs will range from the lower 80s in the higher elevations to the upper 80s across the Piedmont, including cities such as Lynchburg, Danville, and Roanoke.
The highest storm chances—around 30 percent—are expected near the North Carolina border and in the New River Valley, with lighter, isolated activity possible north toward the Shenandoah Valley. Urban areas in the Piedmont are expected to stay mostly dry but may see an isolated cell late in the day.
Travelers in the mountains should remain alert for wet roads and reduced visibility during any afternoon storms. Lightning can strike quickly, so outdoor plans should include a backup shelter.
Showers are expected to fade by tonight, with dry conditions returning for most of the state heading into Tuesday.
