Blacksburg, VA – Spring is in full swing, and with it comes a risk of severe weather. The National Weather Service is warning of a Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms in Blacksburg and surrounding areas on Sunday. Expect storms to develop late afternoon and evening, with the potential for heavy rain, gusty winds, and localized hail. These storms could also trigger isolated flash flooding, especially near low-lying areas and waterways.

According to the National Weather Service, the hazardous weather will begin to intensify as we move into the afternoon hours on Sunday, with storms reaching their peak around 3 p.m. The storms will be accompanied by locally strong winds, rainfall rates of up to an inch per hour, and possible hail. Those planning to travel should expect difficult conditions, especially on rural roads and highways where flooding could make travel treacherous. If you’re in areas prone to flooding, take extra precautions and consider postponing travel if possible.

Beyond Sunday, the weather will remain unsettled, with thunderstorms possible through Monday night. The rain will clear by Tuesday, but not before some cooler temperatures settle in.
