Blacksburg, Va. – Heavy downpours from slow-moving thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding across Southwest Virginia this afternoon and evening, raising risks for drivers and residents in the Blue Ridge region.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the greatest threat of flash flooding will stretch along and east of the Blue Ridge, where storms may repeatedly impact the same neighborhoods. Streams, creeks, and low-lying urban areas—including parts of Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Christiansburg—are most vulnerable to sudden water rises and road closures through tonight.

Travel could become hazardous in several counties, with high water expected on secondary roads and near smaller bridges. Authorities urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, keep mobile devices charged for emergency alerts, and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. “Turn around, don’t drown,” remains the message from emergency officials.

This moderate flood risk marks one of the season’s most significant weather threats for the area. The pattern is similar to flash flooding events seen in June 2021, when localized rainfall led to several rescues.

Thunderstorms are expected to taper off later tonight, but additional advisories or warnings may be issued if rain continues. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service.
