Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg is warning residents across southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia to prepare for gusty showers and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening as a cold front moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service, a Marginal Risk for severe weather is in place today, Sunday, October 19. The main threat will be isolated damaging wind gusts of 30 to 40+ mph, especially between 2 p.m. and midnight. Rainfall totals are expected to range between 0.25 and 0.50 inches, with locally higher amounts near one inch possible in the higher elevations of West Virginia.
The heaviest rain is expected to taper off by around midnight, though strong gusts may continue overnight before quieter weather returns Monday. Winds will gradually decrease through the afternoon as cooler air settles in.
Residents should secure outdoor decorations and trash bins, and use caution while driving during heavier downpours or gusty winds.
