Blacksburg, Virginia — Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings are set to expire across southwest Virginia this morning as winds gradually diminish, though chilly conditions will persist through the rest of Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, winds will continue to weaken today, allowing advisories and warnings to end as scheduled. Despite the improvement, afternoon high temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-20s to mid-30s, keeping conditions cold across the region.
Forecast guidance shows highs near 25 to 30 degrees across higher elevations and low to mid-30s farther south and east. A slight chance of flurries, around 20 percent, is possible later today, though no accumulation or travel impacts are expected.
Travel along major corridors including Interstate 81 through the New River Valley, U.S. Route 460 near Christiansburg, and Interstate 77 farther west should remain mostly dry. However, cold pavement temperatures may allow isolated slick spots to persist in shaded areas, especially during the morning hours.
The cold snap has been driven by lingering Arctic air, but forecasters note that the overall trend is toward quieter weather conditions as winds ease and extreme wind chill values fade. While conditions are improving, the air mass remains cold enough to warrant winter precautions.
Residents are encouraged to continue dressing in layers, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable populations as temperatures remain well below typical daytime comfort levels.
The update is especially relevant for commuters, students, and outdoor workers, as the combination of cold temperatures and even brief flurries can affect comfort and awareness, particularly near higher elevations along I-81.
Officials advise monitoring local forecasts for additional updates, but no new cold-related advisories are expected once current headlines expire this morning.
