Blacksburg, Virginia – After days of bitter cold, a brief but noticeable warmup is arriving across southwest Virginia, bringing spring-like temperatures before cooler conditions return later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, temperatures will climb into the 50s and low 60s beginning Monday and continuing through Tuesday and Wednesday. This marks a significant change from recent below-normal readings and will help improve travel and outdoor conditions across the New River Valley, Roanoke Valley, and surrounding mountain communities.
Forecast highs Monday range from the upper 40s to mid-50s, warming further Tuesday with many locations — including Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, and Roanoke — reaching the upper 50s to low 60s. The warmest conditions are expected along major travel corridors such as Interstate 81, U.S. Route 460, and U.S. Route 11, where sunshine and mild air will dominate daytime hours.
Wednesday will remain mild, though increasing clouds may limit how warm temperatures climb. Even so, highs are expected to stay well above early-February averages before a cooldown begins late in the week. The NWS notes that temperatures are forecast to return closer to seasonal norms by Friday, ending the short-lived warm spell.
While no significant precipitation is expected during the warmup, lingering snowpack in higher elevations may melt during the day and refreeze overnight, potentially creating damp or slick spots during early morning commutes. Drivers traveling mountain roads or shaded areas should remain alert.
This warmer stretch may be especially noticeable for commuters, students, and outdoor workers, offering a temporary break from winter gear before colder air returns.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the mild conditions while staying aware of changing forecasts as the pattern shifts later this week.
