Blacksburg, Virginia – Gusty winds and freshly fallen snow are creating hazardous travel conditions across the region Saturday morning.
According to the US National Weather Service in Blacksburg, blowing and drifting snow is quickly covering road surfaces, reducing visibility, and obscuring lane markings in parts of southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia. These conditions are most noticeable during the morning hours as winds continue to gust.
Officials warn that snow-covered roads may appear merely wet in some locations, but slick and icy spots can develop rapidly, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and higher elevations. Visibility may also drop suddenly when snow is blown across open stretches of roadway.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 81, Interstate 77, U.S. Route 460, and Route 11 are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for changing conditions. Snowplows are actively working in affected areas, and motorists are reminded to give plow crews plenty of room to operate safely.
The National Weather Service emphasizes several key safety steps: clean all snow and ice from vehicles before driving, avoid using cruise control on slick roads, and allow extra stopping distance between vehicles. Flying snow from untreated vehicles can significantly reduce visibility for others on the road.
Even after snowfall tapers off, gusty winds may continue to cause drifting, leading to recurring slick spots through the morning commute.
These conditions are especially impactful for early-morning commuters, students, and commercial drivers, as travel conditions may vary widely over short distances.
Residents are encouraged to delay travel if possible until conditions improve and to monitor official National Weather Service updates for the latest road and weather information.
